Omnical Indirect Calorimetry equipment

The Omnical system is an indirect calorimeter designed for measurements ranging from resting metabolism (hood measurement) to VO2 max (exercise physiology). To measure resting metabolism, the Omnical system is equipped with a small confined space (hood/ canopy) that is placed over the subject’s head.

To perform sports measurements, the Omnical setup is extended with a breathing unit and a facemask to measure the end tidal volume and breathing rate next to the VO2 and VCO2 parameters.

Software and data analysis

To carry out the various protocols different software applications are available. The software gives the opportunity to input metadata of the experiment and subject and shows live measurement data during the test. The data is saved after the test.

Report software is designed to translate measurement data into a report for the subject. The report also includes different graphs by choice, that include the heartrate, power, VO2, VCO2 and threshold.

System performance

System accuracy; 1% ± 2.0% SD or better for VO2 and VCO2 (test conditions @250ml/min oxygen consumption and 100l/min flow).

RQ; 0.02 absolute

High flow till human maximum without “rebreathing”, low flow for RMR infants
Ventilation; 20-450L/min
O2 uptake; 0-8 L/min
CO2 production; 0-8L/min

High update rate VCO2 and VO2
Update measurement values displayed every 5 seconds
